ECCAR
European Coalition of Cities against Racism
ECCAR is the abbreviation for European Coalition of Cities Against Racism.
Translated, this means:
European Coalition of Cities Against Racism.
This means that
Various cities in Europe are working together to combat racism.
Racism is a form of discrimination.
It means that
People have been treated badly.
Because of the color of their skin.
Or because they come from another country.
European cities have joined forces to combat racism since 2004.
More than 160 cities in Europe are taking part.
The city of Jena has been a member of this alliance of cities since June 22, 2022.
That's why we have a 10-point action plan against racism.
One of these 10 points in the action plan is the anti-discrimination office.
The ECCAR city alliance has a steering committee.
This is a group of experienced people.
They make the most important decisions together.
The city of Jena has been a member of this group since October 2025.
Various cities in Europe are members of the Cities Alliance.
The members speak many different languages.
Some members speak German.
There is a special meeting for them.
The meeting is once a year.
In April 2026 the meeting will be in Jena.

European coalition of cities against racism
The European Coalition of Cities Against Racism (ECCAR) is based on a UNESCO initiative and has been in existence since 2004. Over 160 European cities have now joined this coalition.
The city of Jena joined ECCAR on 22.06.2022. It has committed to implementing measures from a 10-point action plan against racism. The establishment of the anti-discrimination office is one of the central measures of the city's 10-point action plan against racism.
In October 2025, the City of Jena was elected to the ECCAR Steering Committee at the General Assembly. Jena can play an active role in further developing the framework conditions, objectives and activities of ECCAR.
In April 2026, Jena will host the meeting of the German-speaking ECCAR member cities. We look forward to working closely with the other members and exchanging experiences.
